About BillSurgeon

BillSurgeon helps US patients check their medical bills for errors and overcharges, and gives them what they need to dispute them. It is operated by BillSurgeon LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company.

Why we built it

Most patients pay their hospital bills without checking them, because itemized bills are hard to read and professional bill review usually costs a share of whatever is recovered. We think every patient should be able to check a bill line by line, for a small flat price, before paying it.

How an audit works

You upload one or several bills from the same medical episode. Each line is read and compared against public federal pricing and coding references, such as Medicare payment rates and drug pricing benchmarks, and against standard billing rules for duplicates, bundling and cancelled services.

Every finding is labeled by confidence. Confirmed findings are backed by hard evidence from the bill and the references. Findings to verify need a document from you or your provider to settle. Informational findings point to rights or programs that may apply, such as the No Surprises Act or hospital financial assistance. We never present a guess as a confirmed error.

You then receive a report with the amount you may be able to recover and a dispute letter you can edit and send yourself.

How we handle your data

Your bill is processed to produce your audit and is not stored afterwards. We do not require an account, we do not sell data, and we only keep anonymous statistics, such as how often each type of error appears, with no names, account numbers or bill images. Details are in our Privacy Policy and Consumer Health Data Privacy Notice.

How our guides are written

Our guides are written and reviewed by the BillSurgeon Editorial Team. Each guide cites primary sources, such as CMS, federal law and peer reviewed research, and shows the date it was last updated. We review every guide at least every three months and correct errors as soon as we find them. If you spot one, write to support@billsurgeon.com.

What BillSurgeon is not

  • We are not a law firm and we do not give medical, legal or financial advice.
  • We are not affiliated with any hospital, insurer or collection agency.
  • We do not take a percentage of what you recover. You pay one flat price per medical episode.
